On November 9, 2006, the Provincial Development Council (PDC) of South Cotabato held a forum with the Department of Energy (DOE) and two mining companies – Daguma Agro-Minerals Inc., (DAMI) and MG Mining and Energy Corporation – to iron out issues on the coal mining project at Barangay Ned in Lake Sebu.
But five-hour forum turned to be a gag as irregularities of the concerned government agencies apparently emerged. The irregularities were not just on who’s abiding the process but as who should be in the forum as well. Read the rest of this entry »

As the government wages an “all-out war” against the New Peoples Army, fear hounded anew the villagers in the hinterlands. The human rights violations have been expected to escalate and will add to the increasing number of unresolved cases.
Among the cases that continue to gather dust in the Commission on Human Rights office is the case of Rogelio Lagaro, a B’laan, who was allegedly killed by government soldiers belonging to the Army’s 25th Infantry Battalion on June 2, 2006. Read the rest of this entry »

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Residents of a remote village in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato have asked government to stop coal exploration activities there conducted by two companies for fears these would destroy their livelihood due to the mining’s impact on the environment.
In a manifesto written in Ilongo, at least 100 residents of Sitio Kibang, Barangay Ned, cited at least eight reasons for opposing the coal exploration activities of MG Mining and Energy Corp. and Daguma Agro Minerals Inc. [Read on]
